When your card won’t pay
Quick recovery steps for declined cards, offline terminals, and transit balance surprises.
Reviewed:
First 60 seconds
- 1Stay calm — staff have seen this before.
- 2Try a second card if you have one.
- 3Ask whether cash is OK (many places still accept it).
- 4Check your banking app for fraud blocks / OTP prompts.
Common causes (not exhaustive)
- Issuer blocking overseas transactions
- Terminal that prefers local cards
- Contactless limit or chip read failure
- Insufficient T-money balance at a subway gate
- Bill split quirks at busy restaurants
Transit-specific
- Insufficient balance: top up at a nearby convenience store or station machine, then re-enter/re-tap per staff guidance.
- Forgot to tap out: talk to station staff; unexplained fares sometimes need a manual fix.
Hotels & deposits
Pre-authorizations can look like “double charges.” Keep receipts and check your statement after checkout.
Prevention checklist
- Two payment methods + modest cash
- Bank travel notice enabled
- Offline screenshot of lodging booking
- Don’t empty your T-money to ₩0 before a long subway ride
TipCommunity trip reports (anecdotal): night markets and tiny dessert shops are frequent “card declined → cash saved the day” stories.
If you lose a wallet, prioritize freezing cards via your bank app, then ask hotel staff about local police lost-property steps.
