Essential apps for visitors

Why install before you land

Short stays run smoother when maps, translation, messaging, and a transit plan work offline or on airport Wi-Fi. Install on home Wi-Fi, download language packs, and screenshot anything you may need without data.

Maps & navigation

• Naver Map (App Store / Google Play) — Korea-first walking, transit, and place detail. Official listings advertise Korean / English / Japanese / Chinese map UI and English navigation; switch language in the app settings after install.
• KakaoMap (App Store / Google Play) — strong alternative for routes, real-time buses, and places. Pairs naturally with Kakao’s taxi / mobility apps if you use them later.
• Google Maps still helps for big-picture planning and many English place names. For last-mile walking, small shops, and subway/bus transfers inside Korea, prefer Naver or Kakao — Google coverage and POI freshness can lag.

Tip

Hours, reviews, and “open now” snippets change. Trust the live app and the storefront over any saved screenshot.

Translation

• Papago (Naver; App Store / Google Play) — text, voice, image/camera, and conversation modes. The App Store listing documents offline text translation after you download language packs — do that on Wi-Fi before you fly.
• Google Translate (App Store / Google Play) — useful backup; download an offline Korean pack the same way.
• Camera / photo translate helps with menus, signs, and packaged-food labels. Results are approximate — confirm allergens and prices with staff when it matters.

Transit (keep it light)

Do not treat this page as a full T-money guide — see T-money basics.

• Use Naver Map or KakaoMap for ETA, transfers, and walking times between gates.
• Most short-stay visitors still buy a physical transit card (convenience stores / subway info desks) and top up with cash. Optional tourist prepaid products exist — compare fees on Visit Korea — Transportation Cards (page note: updated Aug 2026).
• Mobile T-money can work on some phones, but support depends on device, OS, NFC, and which foreign card brands the app accepts that week. Official traveler path for iPhone / Apple Watch: MobileTmoney (App Store) by Tmoney Co., Ltd. Confirm a successful top-up and gate tap before you skip a physical card. • Keep your bank / card app handy for travel notices and freezing a lost card — not a Korea-specific install, but useful when a terminal declines you.

Official T-money EN hub: eng.tmoney.co.kr. Prefer that host over older `www.t-money.co.kr` links (often fail to load).

Messaging & visitor info

• KakaoTalk (App Store) — Korea’s default messenger. Some hotels, hosts, and tour operators prefer KakaoTalk chats or QR friend adds.
• Keep WhatsApp / iMessage / your home apps for friends and family abroad — KakaoTalk does not replace them.
• 1330 Korea Travel Helpline (Korea Tourism Organization): tourist information, interpretation, and complaint routing. Dial 1330 in Korea, or +82-2-1330 from overseas. Visit Korea also lists chat options (1330 Messenger, KakaoTalk, Facebook, Line) on the 1330 Travel Helpline & Complaint Center page. Hours and languages can vary by channel — check that page for current details rather than memorizing a schedule.

Optional: prepaid cards & connectivity

• WOWPASS and similar foreigner prepaid products are optional — Visit Korea lists WOWPASS alongside T-money / EZL / Climate Card options. Compare issuance fees, FX spreads, and top-up rules; none are required for a normal short stay. Details: Visit Korea — Transportation Cards.
• Data: Visit Korea’s Electricity & Communications page (updated Sep 11, 2026) outlines airport roaming centers (KT / SKT / LG U+), prepaid USIM, and eSIM options, plus free public Wi-Fi in many stations and airports. Confirm device unlock + eSIM support with your home carrier; screenshot QR / pickup vouchers before you fly. Do not rely on a single third-party brand name from blogs — start from Visit Korea or the carrier roaming pages linked there.

Setup order (before the flight)

   Install Naver Map, KakaoMap, Papago, KakaoTalk, and (optional) MobileTmoney / your bank app on home Wi-Fi.

   Switch map / Papago UI to a language you read; download offline translation packs.

   Grant location only when you need navigation; skip optional marketing permissions.

   Screenshot e-Arrival / K-ETA confirmations, eSIM QR codes, hotel addresses in Korean, and any KakaoTalk QR your host sent — save to Photos / Files.
